Prologue: Lights Up, Light
JANUARY 28, 2005
MID-EVENING
YOKOHAMA, JAPAN
LIGHT
I stood by the warehouse door and thought about the crowd of people that surrounded me. The police force that works with Near and me, along with his crew, as I waited for them to die.
Useless fools. I thought to myself. I turned and looked at Near.
"Near," I called out. He tilted his head, waiting for me to say something. "Here's something to feed your thoughts. That notebook you have, and the one that Aizawa brought from the Japanese Task Headquarters. Are they both real?"
Near widened his eyes, and I began to walk around the room.
"If you truly want to defeat Kira, as well as test the notebook that Aizawa's carrying..." I stopped and raised my arms. "I guess you're gonna have to write down my name or Mikami's."
Near didn't respond. Instead, he just looked at me with a dirty look. "It's the only way to see if it's real..." I removed a piece of the notebook that I had hidden in my watch. "Or fake!" I began to write down Near's real name on the piece of paper I collected from the notebook.
"He's hidden a piece from the notebook!" Rester pointed at me and shouted. "Matsuda!" I heard Aizawa shout.
I then felt a sharp pain go through my hand. I groaned and dropped the pen along with the paper I had collected from the notebook. I started to breathe heavily in and out of my mouth and turned to look at Matsuda, who was holding a gun.
"Matsuda, you idiot!" I shouted at him. "Don't screw with me!"
"What was it all for then?" he asked. "What about your dad? What the hell did he die for?!" I kept breathing heavily as the blood from my hands started to drip onto the concrete floor.
"My Dad?!" I asked right before I cackled. "You mean Soichiro Yagami? That's right, Matsuda. In this world, all those earnest people like him who fight for justice... they always lose. You want a world where people like that are made to be fools?! I know you understand, so kill the others!! Shoot them!!"
Tears ran down Matsuda's face. "You led your own father to his death," he cried. "And now he's gone, you call him a fool?!"
I didn't respond. Instead, I tried to write Near's last name on the piece of paper with my own blood.
"His blood!" Aizawa shouted. Matsuda yelled and shot me four more times before I fell to the ground. "AUGH!" I groaned from the pain. Matsuda ran up to me until he pointed his gun at me. "I'll kill him, I'll kill him!" he repeated twice. "He has to die!" Matsuda tried to shoot me in the head, but was pulled back before he could.
"It's finally over, isn't it?" I heard Rester ask. "Yes," Near answered.
I lay there in pain as I panted for air. "Where are you, Misa?! Where are you, Takada?!" I cried out. "What will I do now?"
In the distance, I heard a man scream. I looked up and saw Mikami slitting his chest open with a pen and falling to the ground.
"Mikami!" Rester shouted as he and the others ran up to him. I got up and opened the barn door with every bit of strength that I had. "Quick! Stop the bleeding!" Ide said. "It's too late. He'll be dead soon."
I ran out the door and didn't look back. "Wait, Light!" I heard Matsuda shout. "He's getting away!" Aizawa shouted.
In my wounded state, I tried to run away. I cried as I remembered what happened the first day I found the Death Note. I could only imagine what my life would have been like if I hadn't picked up the Death Note. My father would still be alive, Sayu wouldn't have been kidnapped by Mello, and wouldn't have been traumatized due to that incident.
But Misa...would she and I have ever crossed paths if I didn't find the Death Note and become Kira? My God! What would she do if I died like this? My God, I don't wanna die like this! I ran until I saw an empty warehouse. I dropped down onto the staircase and lay there in pain.
RYUK
My eyes glowed all red as I knew what I was about to do as I watched Light stumble in pain to the warehouse.
"Well, Light. It looks like you've lost." I began. "Remember how, in the beginning, when we first met, I told you that I'd be the one writing your name in my notebook? That is part of the agreement between a Shinigami who brings a notebook to the human world and the first human who picks it up." I watched as Light stumbled across the upper floor into the warehouse.
"If they put you in prison, who knows when you'd die? And I don't wanna lie around waiting. So, it's all over. You'll die here. It's been good while it lasted. We eased each other's boredom for a little while."
I picked up the notebook and wrote Light's full name in it. "Well, Light," I said. "It's been interesting."
I looked up as the evening sky soon turned into night. The sunset, the moon, and the stars were so beautiful. As much as I would have loved to stay in the human realm, I knew I had to go back to the Shimigami realm. As the night drew further, I flew away into the night back to the Shinigami Realm.
LIGHT
Soon after falling down the stairs, I felt a pain in my heart. As much as I wanted to, I couldn't scream out. Instead, I stood there thinking about my mother, Sayu, and Misa. So this was how I was going to die, Ryuk? I lay there on the ground, praying that Misa wouldn't commit suicide just so she could be with me and that my mother and Sayu would be okay. As I was about to close my eyes, I saw the image of Ryuzaki, but I didn't know what it meant. Does this mean that he finally had justice? These were the last thoughts that I thought of right before I shut my eyes and eventually died, knowing that neither heaven nor hell would have a place for me.
JANUARY 12, 2006-ALMOST A YEAR AFTER LIGHT YAGAMI WAS KILLED BY RYUK AND WAS DISCOVERED TO BE KIRA THIS WHOLE TIME
WACO, TX
EARLY MORNING-AROUND 5:30 AM
MARIE
I was busy sleeping in my bed during the cold night. It was almost 47 degrees outside. I cuddled myself up with many blankets as I held my black cat named Alex close to me.
"Marie." I heard the voice of a young man calling out my name.
I opened up my brown eyes as I heard someone's voice calling out my name and sat up in my bed. Alex opened up his red eyes and looked around with me as I scanned left and right for the source of the voice. Nothing. I thought as I got up out of bed and turned on the TV.
"Good Morning America," said a woman on the news. "Today, we are discussing the latest developments about the Kira story from Japan."
I quickly changed the channels. "Today we are talking about the Kira case," said a male news reporter. I changed the channel again. "Today, we are talking about the young man who thought he could become the God of a new world," the young lady said.
A picture of Light Yagami appeared on the TV. "Light Yagami, also known as Kira."
I sighed in annoyance. "It's all about Kira today, isn't it?" I asked in an annoyed tone.
"Light Yagami was the top student in his class back in high school in the year 2000, even though he started his killings as Kira a few months prior in 1999."
I opened up my suitcase and placed in a ton of black clothes like my black shirts, black dresses, black shorts, black pants, and black shoes as Alex watched. I walked to the dressers and gathered up more things like my brush, which had Ghostface on it, and my black iPod, which had all of my favorite music on it.
"Turns out the teen had been going undercover as Kira, even while he was working for the cops," the newswoman continued. "And it turns out that he had this power from a notebook known as the Death Note, which people believe has been dropped from the Shinigami realm."
I quickly got my airport ticket, which was for a flight to Tokyo, Japan.
"Shinigamis are believed to be the Gods and Goddesses of Death in Japanese mythology," she continued. "Some theories have been created that those who are killed by Shinigami will soon become Shinigami after their deaths. Though we don't know how true that is, it is written in the Death Note that whoever uses the notebook can neither go to heaven nor hell for all eternity."
I packed in some of my favorite horror movies like Bram Stoker's Dracula from 1992, Final Destination 1, the Halloween series from 1978 to 1998 with Halloween H2O (sorry, but Halloween: Resurrection sucked), The Scream Trilogy, The Craft, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Blair Witch movies, and The Initiation of Sarah. I didn't know what kind of movies they had in Japan, but I at least wanted to take some of my favorite movies from America since I didn't plan on coming back for a while.
"The survivors of his family, his mother, Sachiko Yagami, and sister, Sayu Yagami, refuse to believe Light is Kira. Instead, they believe he was framed and killed by the real Kira, Teru Mikami. The two believe very firmly that Teru had killed Light and then himself."
I glanced at the TV while I packed up my bags. "Now, what of the father, you ask?" the news lady asked. "Well, unfortunately, Soichiro Yagami was wounded in a fight with Mello, also known as Miheal Keehl, in a shoot-out and an explosion. He died from his wounds in the hospital, not knowing that his son, Light, was, in fact, Kira."
"Another thing that makes this story a little bit more interesting is that there are speculative theories about his fiancée, Misa Amane," the news lady continued. "Although it was believed that she committed suicide after the death of Light Yagami, others say that she was arrested once again for being "The Second Kira" and is now in a mental institution awaiting her death, which may not come until old age."
All of a sudden, the TV started to go into static as I saw words appear on the TV:
"Marie, come and find me," the message said as I heard the young man's voice again. "I'm watching you," he said again as the words popped up on the TV.
"My business isn't over yet," the message appeared on the TV as I heard the same male voice for the fourth time. "I want you to help me." The words appeared on the TV as I heard the man's voice again.
"What the hell?" I muttered. "Is this a ghost? A Shinigami?" The next message sent a chill down my spine. "I'm right behind you." I heard the voice as the message appeared on the TV.
I heard the door slam shut. Instantly, Alex and I looked up and saw a man with red eyes who looked exactly like Light Yagami, looking straight at me with a smirk. I gasped and fell back.
This has to be a dream! Please tell me it's all just a dream! I prayed.
