Chapter 26: Nanook x Aha

The world had been called something.

It was not called anything now. The designation in whatever cartographic systems had tracked it would be updated eventually — a note, a timestamp, a category. Destroyed. Nanook's Path. The bureaucracy of the universe continued regardless.

The ruins held the specific quality of aftermath. Not the active destruction — that was finished, the violence complete in the total way that Nanook's work was complete. What remained was the settled evidence: the architecture of something that had organized itself into cities, roads, the infrastructure of a civilization that had believed it had time. The belief had been incorrect.

Nanook stood in what had been the central plaza.

He did not survey in the way of conquerors reviewing their victories. He stood because the destruction was complete and the standing was what came after completion. The next world was already in the calculation. This one had served its purpose.

"You always pick the scenic spots."

He turned.

She was sitting on the remains of what had been a fountain — the stone basin still intact, the mechanism that had made water move now irrelevant. The mourning dress was black with the specific weight of formal grief, the kind that had been stitched by someone who understood that grief required ceremony. The red mask covered her eyes. Her hands were folded in her lap with the composure of someone who had come to pay respects.

"Aha," he said.

"Nanook." She tilted her head, and the red mask caught the light of what had been this world's star, now visible without atmosphere to filter it. "You've been busy."

"Destruction doesn't schedule itself."

"No," she said. "It doesn't." She looked at the ruins with the expression the mask allowed — everything below it. "Do you know what this world's last art form was?"

He looked at her.

"Comedy," she said. "Specifically a tradition of performance comedy that used physical mishap as the primary language. Falling down. Things going wrong in elaborate sequences. The universal grammar of things failing to be what they were supposed to be." She looked at the basin. "The last performance was three days before you arrived. A comedian fell off a stage into the orchestra pit and the audience laughed until they cried." She paused. "The comedian laughed too. Eventually."

"You watched it," he said.

"I watch everything." She turned the red mask toward him. "Why this world?"

"It opposed the Path of Destruction," he said. "It had developed a defensive doctrine specifically targeted at Nanook's followers. It was becoming a model for other worlds."

"So you destroyed the model."

"I destroyed the resistance."

"And the comedian," she said. "And the audience. And the people who were asleep and the people who were working and the people who were in the middle of the specific ordinary moment that turned out to be their last one." She said this without accusation — with the flat observation of someone noting a comprehensive list.

"Destruction does not select," he said.

"No," she said. "That's the part I find most interesting." She stood from the basin, and the mourning dress moved with the specific weight of serious fabric. "You came here and completed something. The completion is total. Nothing about this world will resist anything anymore, which was the goal, which means the goal is achieved." She looked at the ruins. "And it's funny."

He looked at her.

"Not the dying," she said. "I'm not laughing at the dying. I'm laughing at the structure of it." She turned the red mask toward the ruins. "A civilization that built a resistance to Destruction. That spent resources and time and the best minds they had on the problem of how to not be destroyed. That passed the knowledge on and refined it and made it exemplary." She paused. "And then you arrived anyway."

"The resistance was insufficient."

"All resistance is insufficient," she said. "Eventually. That's not a critique of the resistance — it's a structural observation about the universe." She turned to him. "The comedian who fell into the orchestra pit — he got up. He finished the performance. He bowed. The audience loved him more for the fall than they would have for a clean show." She looked at the ruins. "The difference is that he had a next performance."

Nanook looked at the ruins.

"You're trying to tell me something," he said.

"I'm not trying to tell you anything," she said, with the absolute sincerity of someone who meant it. "I don't try to tell Aeons things. I observe and I find it funny and sometimes I say what I find funny." She turned the red mask toward him. "What I find funny is that Destruction and Elation are more similar than either of us usually acknowledges."

He looked at her.

"Both absolute," she said. "Both complete. Destruction ends things entirely. Elation experiences things entirely." She looked at her hands. "The mourning dress is because I grieve this world. Not the civilization — the comedy tradition. It was genuinely funny. The universe will produce another one eventually, but this specific flavor of physical-mishap performance comedy with this specific cultural grammar — that's gone." She looked at the ruins. "I find that funny too. The grief itself is funny because I'm an Aeon of Elation wearing a mourning dress in the ruins of a destroyed world and it's completely sincere."

"You grieve things you find funny," he said.

"The funniest things are the ones worth grieving," she said. "Comedy is the truth about the gap between what things are supposed to be and what they are. The gap is funny and the gap is painful and those are the same observation." She turned to leave. "Enjoy the next world, Nanook."

He looked at the ruins.

"Aha," he said.

She stopped.

"The comedy tradition," he said. "Was it documented anywhere."

She turned the red mask toward him.

"Some of it," she said, after a moment. "The physical forms don't survive destruction. The patterns — the specific logic of how the mishap worked — I have some of that."

"Good," he said, which surprised him slightly in the saying of it.

She looked at him for a moment with whatever expression the mask covered.

"You're more interesting than you look," she said, and walked into the ruins and was not there.

He stood in the destroyed plaza and the star's unfiltered light came down on everything equally, and somewhere in the Elation's domain a red-masked woman in a mourning dress filed a comedy tradition away in the vast collection of things the universe had found funny and then lost.
