No monsters, no codependent little brother, no angels (devastatingly handsome or otherwise) — and for Dean, there never have been.
It’s a little lonely sometimes; somehow a little… existentially wrong, sure, with a past he’s still burying and a future he can’t figure out, but he’s not going to bitch about it. He can even work around the nightmares bleeding in from another world; they feel enough like his own to fit in. It’s still better than before.
Then, Chuck Shurley shows up at his dive bar. And Dean lets the monster in.

"Seriously, Cas, why are you still following me around?" Dean breathes against Castiel’s mouth and there’s something wrecked under it, "how long are you gonna chase a losing hand?"
"...Until you win," Castiel replies. His eyes blaze in the dark, even without tapping his grace.
"What if that's never?"
Castiel considers this, carefully.
"Perhaps until the end, then."
Dean's hand tightens a little in Castiel's tie.
"...Okay," he says after a moment, reedy and thin, "okay," and then his grip tightens and he drags Castiel closer, between his spread thighs, worn denim scraping against slacks, and kisses him like the world's ending tonight.
Chuck…frowns. His typing crawls to a halt.

Simon is objectively worse off. His prayer to live was answered by the Blood God, but in its ignorance it did not distinguish between Simon and the rest of the SM-13. He's stuck in a hellish limbo, encased in the mutant tree and fused with the submarine, reliving the horror of the last moments of his life, waiting for freedom.I know I know. Another "Grace finds Simon floating in space" fic. Listen, I was blissfully ignorant. After consuming some bloodymary fanart I was unwillingly possessed by a creature from hell, vomiting the contents of this fic into my notes app while the Great Unknowable Eye of God beheld me in my stupor. After three days of not eating or sleeping, I returned to consciousness and had to upload this.

Why not bypass humans altogether, and have God set aside empty puppets - soulless, perfect, no consent required, really, why human, or human shaped things at all? Why not have the battle for the fate of the world take place between two hawks, a pine tree and mistletoe, a river and a canyon? Are humans just God's favorite shape?
The Bible says that God made humans in his image - but Dean suspects that this is, like many things in that book - a lie. That God was making shit up by the seat of his proverbial pants, and maybe he looked like a planet, a constellation, or Nothing. What came first, the chicken or the egg - God as the Face of Man or the Face of Man as God?

There’s an archangel in Dean’s head and strangers from another universe in his house. His kid is sick, his mother is young and aloof, and to make matters worse, his best friend is keeping secrets. Again. Only this time, Dean finds out about Castiel's deal with the Empty, and he's got a pretty solid idea about what (or who) might trigger it. Knowing full well Cas must stay miserable to stay alive, Dean makes his move.
This is the way they can have each other. No matter how much it hurts.
